Biography

Boris Charmatz trained at the École de danse de l’Opéra National de Paris and then at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, and is the author of over 30 choreographic works. From 2009 to 2018, he directed the CCN de Rennes et de Bretagne, where he set up the Musée de la danse.

He has presented his work on numerous stages, including MoMA in New York (2013), the Tate Modern in London (2015) and the Paris Opera (2015). In 2020, the Festival d’Automne in Paris devoted a Portrait to him, with 9 projects. Since August 2022, he is the director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. With Terrain, he is building a new artistic project between Germany and France, dedicated to the joint development of his choreographic work and Pina Bausch’s repertoire. In 2023, he created Liberté Cathédrale at the Mariendom, a Brutalist church in Neviges, his first piece to bring together the Tanztheater Wuppertal Ensemble and dancers from Terrain. At the end of 2023, the FRAC Sud – Cité de l’art contemporain in Marseille, presented the exhibition Boris Charmatz – Danses gâchées dans l’herbe, made up of 6 films. In 2024, he is the Artiste Complice of the Festival d’Avignon, where he presents CERCLES, a public workshop for participants, Liberté Cathédrale in the open air, and Forever (immersion in Café Müller by Pina Bausch).
