Volcano Street et Jubilee Street

In her work, Katja Schenker takes the body as a point of departure for exploring the spaces it inhabits and creates.

To produce her large-scale drawings, she covers her body in gouache and presses it against the paper, leaving behind physical traces of its movements. She then intervenes with oil stick, adding dynamic lines that extend these imprints and open up new spaces of connection.

The Jubilee Street and Volcano Street series form part of an ongoing investigation into the notions of stability and instability. Through drawing, gesture and the body’s physical engagement, Schenker examines the relationships between interior and exterior space, openness, grounding and the capacity to enter into relation with others. Executed predominantly in shades of red, these works explore the materiality of pigment, the pressure exerted on the surface, and the body’s presence within the space of the drawing.
