Biography
Joan Jonas studied Art History at Mount Holyoke College in 1958 and sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at Columbia University in 1965. Since 1998 she has taught at MIT. Jonas has had solo exhibitions at the Tate Modern London, Haus der Kunsst Munich, the Queens Museum of Art New York, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, Stadtsgalerie Stuttgart, Dia:Beacon New York, Castello di Rivoli Turin, the Drawing Center New York, Kunstmuseum Berne, the Walker Art Center Minneapolis, The Kitchen New York, SFMoMA San Francisco. She has taken part in Documenta 5, 6, 8, and 11 in, the Whitney New York, Taipei, Sydney, and Sao Paulo biennales. She represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 2015. In 2024, MoMA New York will devote its most important retrospective to her, Good Night, Good Morning. She presented a performance in 1978 and an exhibition in 2008 at the Centre d’art contemporain in Geneva.
Mirror Piece I & II has been shown at the Tate Modern London (2018), Mount Holyoke College Art Museum (MA, USA, 2019), Serralves Foundation Porto (2019), Haus der Kunst Munich (2022), Perth festival (2024), and, in summer 2024, at MoMA New York, the Getty Center Los Angeles, and the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp.
