Scores
A selection of scores from the programmed performances have been presented in a modular set-up.
The artists taking part in the 3rd edition of Dance First Think Later were invited to exhibit the scores of their programmed performances. These visual elements – drawings, sketches, photos, texts, notes – rarely shown in theatres and festivals, allowed us to immerse ourselves in the artists’ creative processes and bring additional perspectives to the perception and understanding of their work. This proposal was received positively, but it also raised a number of questions about the very notion of a score: what was it that made sense to share about the gestation of their work, or its transmission? These queries and the discussions they sparked off reinforced interest in this essential part of the development of an artistic project.
The term ‘score’ has been used for convenience, to encompass a wide variety of documents. It also includes different uses for these documents: notation tools, methodologies, research into forms and movements, protocols or archives.
